HID Light Replacement K1300R & F800R - How To

Postby mfettara on Thu Dec 03, 2009 6:27 am

Here's a report on the HID conversion on my K1300R (F800R below).

I ordered the 1 Off Motorsport low beam conversion kit from Jose. it also includes the CAN-BUS decoder to prevent "bulb" error messages.

It takes between 30 and 45 minutes to install and is really easy.

K1300R

Tools needed :
Drill with a 1 inch bit - or smaller and a file
    torx screw drivers
pliers (preferably that allow to cut)
electrical crimping pliers and 2 flat connectors (red 1.5 mm wire diameter)
lots of plastic ties (preferably black)
alcohol and clean cloth in case you touch the bulb

Upgrade process :
    remove right airduct
    remove battery cover
    remove right tank cover
    remove low beam cap (right)

HID ballast with CAN-BUS module fitted
Left to right: Ballast - CAN-BUS module - what I call the 2nd Module

Drill the cap in the centre to a diameter to fit the grommet
Image

do not drill to try and pass the ballast connector otherwise the hole will be too large for a tight waterproof seal. Instead, cut off the 2 flat connectors at the end of the black & red wires.
Image

pass the grommet assembly through the cap (from the inside) and re thread the black & red whires through the grommet once in place (from the outside) and re crimp 2 new connectors at the end.
Image

Remove the bulb clear plastic protection (unscrew the top), then cut/crack the bottom part with pliers to remove
pull back & cut/crack the bottom dark bulb protector (this is needed to make space in the cap for the original halogen bulb connector)
Image

Place the bulb in the headlight and fasten with clips. connect the black wire to the brown wire of the original connector and the red one to the yellow one.

Place the connector sideways in the cap and replace the cap (gently pull the wires through the grommet).

Placing the ballast. 2nd module and CAN-BUS:
The trick is to make sure that no cables interfere with the steering damper "1".

Slide the Ballast in the space in front of the battery "2". Tie the CAN-BUS module to the front frame routing the cable to the ballast over the grommet. Place the module with the connector facing front and at the bottom.

Tie the 2nd module to the air intake

Connect the bulb wires (big connector to CAN-BUS module routing on the top of the front frame right, 2 smaller connectors to 2nd module).

test it

replace tank cover
replace air duct
replace battery cover

F800R

The process is similar to above except for ballast & modules location. Here's what I propose :

remove windshield
tilt or remove the headlight assembly

Ballast can be slid under the instruments between the holder and the base on the left side (looking at the instruments sitting on the bike). The CAN-BUS module is mounted on the same side parallel to the ballast but under the holder maintained in place with the holder's front left screw. Both modules are tied together with a plastic tie.

The 2nd module is fixed with a plastic tie in the recess under the instruments top holder (between speedo & rev).

Connect the red & black wires to the original bulb connector (red to yellow, black to brown. Then store the connector sideways in the cap before replacing it.
Image

Connect the cables (route the bulb cable to the CAN-BUS module around the instruments betweeen the bottom and top holders).

Test it
replace windshield
